GDC 2019 Session: Controller to Display Latency in Call of Duty

GDC 2019 Session: Controller to Display Latency in Call of Duty

During his GDC 2019 Session on Wednesday, March 20, Akimitsu Hogge (Software Engineer, Activision) will talk about a practical approach to reduce input latency.

To create a satisfying experience in competitive games, low input latency is essential. Due to their complexity with multiple parallel timelines running at once, modern engines can make it difficult to track down the triggers of latency. In this talk, you will learn how to reduce latency by analyzing the path that data flows through a game engine from the input sample all the way to the video scan-out hardware.

In the next step, Akimitsu Hogge will explain methods to identify and measure individual segments on this path. By this procedure, a dynamic throttle can be implemented which allows squeezing the input sample as close to the end of the frame as possible without dropping frames. Another important subject will be how the interaction between GPU and display scan-out timelines (Vsync enabled) causes latency. More information about this session is available here.
