Hey I want to make a videogame with unity 4, and wanted to hire some help. How much should Game programmers be paid per hour? I heard the Average is 15-20$ per hour.
It really depends on where the programmer is based and how much experience the programmer has. Generally, the quality and speed at which you get code from the programmer is directly proportional to the amount of experience the programmer has. Really, you have two separate dimensions that, when multiplied together, decide what the cost of hiring a programmer is.
The location of the programmer is probably the most important factor. Hiring a game programmer in Silicon Valley, California can easily cost over $100,000 per year in salary alone, with senior engineers making at least two to three times that much. This doesn’t include other benefits they expect, like health care and perks. You could probably break it down to an average (a mid-level programmer) of around $13,000-15,000 in total cost per month to handle pay and benefits. Breaking that down into 4.5 work weeks per month (roughly) and 8 hours per day of work, you’re looking at an hourly cost of around $72-83 USD per hour. If you were to hire a similarly experienced software engineer from Poland, for example, it’d be much cheaper – probably around $17-20 USD per hour for a mid-level engineer. However, you’d also have to deal with things like language barrier and the time difference when working with a programmer.
You also need to consider how many programmers you need and how long you expect the project to run. Not all programmers are fungible or interchangeable – a server engineer has a different knowledge base than a client engineer, who is different from a UI engineer, who is different from a gameplay engineer. Building all of the software systems for a game can be pretty hectic for a single programmer (I’ve tried it myself) and you’re going to need ongoing support to fix things like bugs or implement design changes you didn’t plan for at the beginning. In any case, I wish you luck. Finding good programmers for the team can be a difficult task. My team went looking for a senior gameplay engineer for the better part of eight months without much luck. We eventually settled for a mid-level engineer that we felt could grow into the role.
